Conclusion & posters from final presentation 29th Nov 2010

Video/visual director on the day, Macs

Conclusion - this design project, Cells, based on a range of cross-disciplinary themes of the CELL (biological cells through to prison cells..) has made links to current and forecasted topics in the areas of design, technology and science. Students were asked to investigate minute, small space; starting with their own 'cells'; rooms, student halls, then moving on to research cells more generally and focus on themes along this process path. Eventually designs for a 'cell infestation'/small scale space was proposed and placed on site the Tate Modern Turbine Hall in London through drawings and models.

Widening comprehension into new technologies and appreciation of related fields of study (science, technology etc) has enriched students' skill base, knowledge and participation in the wider context of the design/science world that is so central within our discipline right now - and certainly is the way forward in years to come.

Participation in the project and overall links to the Cells symposium has been an important learning curve for the students and external participants alike. Students are at the fore front of new ideas; the new generation and we need to have a cross-disciplinary and cross-artistic element within the everyday of study, making and thinking to widen participation and inclusion and make new collaborative links.

Pre-pre-crit presentations Monday 23rd November.. and other matters

Dear Students,
A reminder that there are presentations of all work to date on Monday 23rd November 2010. This is the last opportunity to get your work seen, discussed and to receive feedback before the final presentation and summative assessment point on 29th November. Attendance on both the above dates is obligatory.

After 23rd Nov, there is a focus on the Cells Symposium and you have an important role to play. You will be listening to a lot of varied and very interesting topics relating to Cells in some format - this information is to be reviewed and discussed at and after the event. You do need to attend all lectures/presentations and view the artwork during and after the event. This will be a very intensive day - arrive promptly and prepared. Take notes and participate.

Instructions will be given out next week for the Thursday 25th - you will be hosts and help make the event a smooth and pleasurable, educational and collaborative event for all.

Check out the event schedule - now online on the Cells Symposium blog.

Please note, I have selected the images that are mostly your own work - there are lots of reference, research etc., let's start making individual, innovative images for slideshows in future - YOUR OWN WORK IS always MORE INTERESTING!

Some slides I could not read/open, therefore some students are not represented here. If most of or all your slides were research from the internet, those slides will not be shown here. Please remember to REFERENCE clearly the IMAGE SOURCE.

Photograph models too (Rupinder etc.,) and do not rely on images from the internet. The most interesting projects are those that make their own research - this way YOU are in charge

Good day overall, now everyone needs to speep up focus and development. Good Luck also for Thursday's crit.

THOSE STUDENTS WHO DID NOT LEAVE A COPY OF THE PRESENTATIONS ON MY LAPTOP TODAY MUST EMAIL THESE TO ME OR LEAVE A CD FOR ME. Thanks.

Researchers from the University of Greenwich, the University of Southern Denmark, University of Glasgow and University College London are working with an architectural firm and a building materials manufacturer to use protocells - bubbles of oil in an aqueous fluid sensitive to light or different chemicals – to fix carbon from the atmosphere or to create a coral-like skin, which could protect buildings.."
